Day 1: Ishinomaki Oyster Adventure
Day 1 Tour Highlights
A little over an hour commute from Sendai brings you to the charming town of Ishinomaki on the Oshika peninsula, home to a manga museum and a bustling port. While 70% of the oysters farmed in Miaygi Prefecture comes from this very spot, the collision of the Oyashio and the Kuroshio ocean currents here has created one of the most fertile fishing and sea-agriculture locations on the planet: the Sanriku fishing grounds.
On this private tour, experience the bounty of this area for yourself. Start your day strong on board a local fishing vessel, whose captain and crew will guide you through fishing and foraging in these teeming waters. After collecting your seasonally appropriate catch, you’ll head back to shore for a culinary lesson from a local master chef. Though Ishinomaki is small, it is home to two celebrity Japanese chefs, Tsukasa Abe and Masateru Imamura. Enjoy the incredible meal you have created, from sea to table, before taking a stroll through Ishinomaki. Return to Sendai afterward via private charter vehicle.
Enjoy a bar-hopping tour of Sendai this evening to get your appetite whetted for the rest of the trip! Settle into your boutique hotel this evening.
Day 2: Sushi and Shojin Ryori in Shiogama and Matsushima
Day 2 Tour Highlights
Take a private charter bright and early to Shiogama, Japan’s true sushi capital! Thrill as you watch the local fish auction (at a much more reasonable time than Toyosu, with fresh fish!). Afterwards, make your way to the wholesale market area to build your own breakfast kaisendon bowl from fresh seafood you will purchase moving between the hundred plus stalls.
After breakfast, enjoy a quick ride over to the port town of Matsushima. Take in one of the three scenic views of Japan from the first-class cabin of a tour boat around the bay.
In the afternoon, walk the wide avenues of Matsushima to Enstuin Temple. Delight in a Date-clan inspired shojin ryori kaiseki lunch at Ungai, a restaurant on the grounds of the temple. After lunch, why not take in some temples before relaxing at your accommodations for the night, an onsen ryokan overlooking the bay. Enjoy an traditional kaiseki ryori lunch at your hotel, and sink into the fabulous natural hot spring baths as you end your day.
Day 3 Tour Highlights
Enjoy a full traditional Japanese breakfast spread at your onsen ryokan this morning. Wander this picturesque town after breakfast until check-out, and continue on to your next adventure in Japan!
