Day 1: Culinary Traditions and Local Hospitality

Day 1 Tour Highlights

Travel from Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station aboard the Yamagata Shinkansen.

Upon arrival, check in to your hotel conveniently located near Yamagata Station.

In the afternoon, choose from a selection of immersive culinary experiences led by local masters and supported by an experienced guide with deep connections to the region’s artisans, chefs, and cultural practitioners.

Available experiences include:

Tsuyahime Rice Cooking Workshop

Visit a historic ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) in the heart of Yamagata City and learn how to prepare a variety of dishes using Tsuyahime, Yamagata’s celebrated premium rice variety. Discover the techniques and traditions that have made this rice one of Japan’s most highly regarded brands.

Yamagata Soba-Making Experience

Learn the art of soba noodle making alongside a local craftsman. Using buckwheat grown in Yamagata, guests will knead, roll, and cut their own noodles before enjoying them as a freshly prepared lunch.

Traditional Wagashi and Matcha Experience

Create beautiful seasonal wagashi sweets under the guidance of artisans whose family business has been producing traditional Japanese confections for generations. The experience concludes with a serving of matcha tea enjoyed alongside your handmade creations.

After the experience, return to your hotel to relax before the evening’s activities.

In the evening, join your local guide for a bar-hopping tour featuring three carefully selected establishments around Yamagata Station. Sample regional cuisine, local sake, and the welcoming atmosphere of Yamagata’s nightlife district.

For families, non-drinkers, or guests seeking a different experience, alternative dining programs featuring local chefs and specialty restaurants can be arranged.

Day 2: Spiritual Heritage, Traditional Craftsmanship, and Zao Onsen

Day 2 Tour Highlights

After breakfast and check-out, spend the day exploring Yamagata with the comfort of a chartered vehicle.

Begin the morning with a visit to the historic Yamadera Temple. Accompanied by a guide from the Yamaderans Guide Association, enjoy a peaceful ascent of this sacred mountain temple before the day’s larger crowds arrive.

As you climb the temple’s ancient stone stairway, learn about the history, culture, and spiritual traditions that have shaped Yamadera for more than a thousand years. Upon reaching the summit, take in spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Following lunch in the temple town, return to Yamagata City for a visit to a historic kimono workshop with a heritage spanning more than 500 years.

Here, guests will gain rare insight into the intricate process of traditional kimono production. Observe skilled artisans as they create textiles entirely by hand and participate in a hands-on workshop, where you can try traditional dyeing or weaving techniques and create your own small handcrafted piece to take home as a souvenir.

In the late afternoon, travel to the renowned hot spring resort of Zao Onsen and check in to your traditional ryokan.

Take time to relax in Zao’s famous mineral-rich hot springs before changing into a yukata robe and enjoying a stroll through the atmospheric hot spring town.

The day concludes with an elegant multi-course Japanese dinner at your ryokan, featuring seasonal ingredients and regional specialties from across Yamagata Prefecture.

Day 3: Mt. Zao and Departure

Day 3 Tour Highlights

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic ride on the Zao Ropeway for breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests.

Depending on the season, guests may enjoy gentle walks, observation points, cafés, and spectacular panoramic scenery from the upper stations.

After descending the mountain, stop at the Yamagata Zao Roadside Station, where you can browse local products, regional specialties, and souvenirs while sampling some of Yamagata’s famous snacks and delicacies.

Following the visit, transfer to Yamagata Station, where the tour concludes and guests are free to continue their journey through Japan.
