Staying at Yuzu no Azemichi Amago no Kaeru
Shibata, Miyagi Prefecture
Spend time in a space of extraordinary freedom, surrounded by tranquil countryside views in a nostalgic old Japanese-style house.
This 170-year-old traditional house has been renovated as a whole-house rental accommodation, preserving its old-world charm while creating a comfortable Japanese-style space for guests to enjoy.
Spacious earthen floors, irori hearths, thick pillars and beams evoke a sense of gravity that you can’t experience in modern buildings.
Near the accommodation stands a ginkgo tree, designated as a Miyagi Prefecture Cultural Property and Natural Monument, said to have been the site of rain prayers in long ago.
To the north stretch the cultivation fields of Shibata Town’s yuzu brand, the “Amago no Yuzu”, allowing you to experience the seasonal landscapes of the mountain village and the bounty of nature.
The full services of a hotel or ryokan are not provided, and there are no televisions installed. Please enjoy leisurely conversation with family and friends in this space imbued with nostalgia.
■Accommodation
The ground floor features an open-plan design with tatami rooms and wooden-floored areas with tables. The second floor is wide and spacious, and can be used freely. Previously used for raising silkworms, it creates a calm atmosphere with its slightly low ceilings.
There is no television, so you can enjoy your time in the middle of nature leisurely.
The interior is illuminated solely by soft-toned lighting, allowing you to relax in a gentle glow reminiscent of natural light.
Staff are only present in the building for check-in, check-out, and to provide breakfast. Other than these times, the whole building is exclusively yours to enjoy special time with friends and family.
