A five-day, four-night private tour of Northern Tohoku

Trek, hike, cycle, and kayak through three prefectures, actively enjoying Aomori, Akita, and Iwate’s sights, sounds, and some really excellent cuisine on this private tour. We’ll take you from Hirosaki’s vibrant music scene to Shirakami sanchi’s beechwood forests; from quiet mountain onsens and apple orchards to active forges; and from mountaintops to mountain lakes. Along the way, stretch your body and your mind as you explore this region’s history, culture, and cuisine, enabled in your quest by a dedicated interpreter guide to help you navigate and converse regardless of your Japanese level.

Day 1

Tour Highlights

After arriving in Hirosaki, meet your guide at the station, who will help you get settled into your hotel for the day. Explore Hirosaki Castle’s grounds and museum this afternoon, and get to know this northern city.

For dinner, you are in for a treat! Tonight you get dinner and a show, at an izakaya specializing in tsugaru shamisen playing and local cuisine.

Day 2

Tour Highlights

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at your hotel, travel to the World Heritage Path Beech Forest Walking Path for a guided trek with an experiences local guide.

For lunch, enjoy a bento lunch in these beautiful woods, before gearing up for a cycling and kayaking adventure! Today you’ll hop on a road bike for a long ride down to the slopes of a mountain lake, where you will swap a road bike for a kayak through submerged trees.

After enjoying a nice treat and a photo-op on the lake, you’ll head off to your final destination for the day, an incredible onsen ryokan in the woods. Enjoy a kaiseki dinner with local apples (an Aomori specialty!) before heading off for a soak in your private onsen bath to relax your muscles after an active and adventurous day.

Day 3

Tour Highlights

After breakfast at your ryokan, center your mind and body with a guided yoga class. Once you are limber, you’ll hop back in the saddle for a guided cycling tour of the local apple orchards. 

For lunch, enjoy a local specialty: apple rice! Followed by some apple picking of your own to tide you over for the next few days, because you are now leaving Aomori!

Travel via private charter vehicle to Kazuno, Akita, where you will enjoy another night at an onsen ryokan.

Tour Highlights

After a delicious breakfast at hotel, you will go on a guided visit to an historic late-Jomon period edifice, the Oyu Stone Circle. This is the largest stone circle in Japan, and features a museum as well. 

For lunch today, delight in Akita specialty kiritanpo! This toasted rice skewer hot pot dish will keep you energized and enthusiastic for hours and hours of adventure.

This afternoon, you’ll travel to Hachimantai, and enjoy some free time to explore until dinner at a local izakaya, before spending the night on the mountain at a ski resort hotel with an onsen bath.

Tour Highlights

After an early breakfast at the hotel, enjoying the view, it’s time to cycle again! Enjoy incomparable views and experiences on a field ride through Hachimantai’s fields, with Mt. Iwate forming the perfect backdrop for this incredible ride. Drop in for lunch at a local mom-and-pop Italian place, run by a couple of world travellers (like yourself!), before heading off to a local ironworks factory for a tour and some souvenir shopping. Wind down your tour at the station closest to the factory, where you will hop on a train back to Tokyo and your next adventure!
