Day 1

Tour Highlights

Start off your adventure in Fukushima with a deep-dive into a pop-culture phenomenon at the Sukagawa Tokusatsu Archives Center. Sukagawa is the hometown of Eiji Tsuburaya, a ground-breaking special effects director and cinematographer and co-creator of such monumental works as Godzilla and the Ultraman franchise, known by the moniker “Father of Tokusatsu.” Tokusatsu is a Japanese term meaning special effects, and is frequently used to describe not only filmmaking techniques, but also the genre of films springing from those techniques, usually sci-fi, monster, and superhero movies. Explore the techniques and culture of Japanese special effects filmmaking at this unique museum.

One of Tsuburaya’s most enduring creations, beloved by Japanese both young and old, the masked hero character Ultraman is a fixture of Sukagawa City. Make a stop by the Sukagawa City Community Plaza and register yourself as a resident of the Land of Light in the M78 nebula, the home land of Ultraman.

Enjoy a lunch at a local restaurant founded in the late 70s and beloved by locals and travelers alike for its relaxed atmosphere and homey food.

Continue on your journey by travelling around the city on a pilgrimage to all 13 of the Ultraman monuments erected in Sukagawa. Along your way, spot and snack on Ultraman breads and sweets and other tasty delights inspired by the superhero franchise.

In deep contrast to the futuristic and explosively fun action of the tokusatsu genre, your next destination will be a journey to the past and a slower-paced life, as you explore Ouchi-juku. A former post town along a trade route used in the Edo period, Ouchi-juku was established as a haven for travelers, where they could have access to food, accommodations, and rest on their long journeys by foot. Restored today to look much as it did in former days, Ouchi-juku’s paths are lined with thatched-roof buildings housing shops, restaurants, and inns. Take a stroll through the charming streets and imagine what life was like here hundreds of years ago.

Stay overnight at a traditional Japanese inn in Ashinomaki Onsen, a quiet hot springs town overlooking a peaceful river gorge. Enjoy the warm hospitality and traditional feel of the inn and its unusual terraced baths. Don’t miss the breathtaking lobby, which closely resembles the Infinity Castle from the popular manga and anime series, Demon Slayer.

Day 2

Tour Highlights

Start off the day with a Kengido Samurai Experience at your accommodations. This unique discipline combines performing arts with traditional sword play for a unique and challenging experience.

Drop by Ashinomaki Onsen Station, a quaint railway station connecting the peaceful hot springs town with the rest of the prefecture, to introduce yourself to the famously free-spirited stationmaster–who also happens to be a cat. Meet Sakura, hard at work keeping things running like clockwork at the station and politely seeing passengers off on their journeys…or maybe taking a nap in the sun.

Stop for a lunch of local cuisine of the Aizu area, which you can savor in an atmospheric restaurant reminiscent of the good old days.

Feel as if you have taken a step even further back in time by visiting the magnificent Tsuruga Castle. Although the castle keep was destroyed during the Boshin War of the 1860s, it was carefully restored over the years and today its towering silhouette and bright red roof, unique among castles in Japan, are a symbol of the spirit and courage of those who came before. Learn about the history of the area and samurai culture in the castle museum and enjoy panoramic views from the observation platforms at the top of the keep.

The park surrounding the castle delights in every season, especially when its thousands of cherry blossoms are in bloom. The original stone walls, still standing strong on the grounds of the castle, are an imposing presence. Stroll through the castle and castle park clad in kimono, and enjoy a matcha tea experience at the nearby Rinkaku Teahouse, where feudal lords once conducted tea ceremonies. Try your hand at a local craft, painting your own akabeko, a red cow originating from local folklore and thought to be a bringer of good luck and fortune.

Transfer to Higashiyama Onsen, a historical hot spring town founded over a thousand years ago. Stay overnight at a hot spring inn with a private spring source and surrounded by the mountain scenery, relaxing body and soul after a full day. To round off the evening, enjoy a private geigi (geisha) experience at your inn.

Day 3

Tour Highlights

Transfer to Nisshinkan, a former samurai school where children of the local samurai clans came to train academically and physically. Try your hand at kyudo (Japanese archery), a martial art focused around personal discipline to cultivate physical, mental, and spiritual harmony.

After training your body and mind, relax in nature with a visit to Lake Inawashiro. One of Japan’s largest freshwater lakes, a walk through the picturesque scenery and flora and fauna will soothe your soul.

Enjoy lunch in Koriyama City, then stop by the only microdistillery in Tohoku for a whiskey blending and hand-filling experience.

Transfer to the nearest bullet train station or airport and move on to your next adventure!
