Sendai Han Hanayama Nuruyu Bansho Museum
Miyagi Prefecture
Experience History
Nuruyu Bansho was a checkpoint station at the entrance to Akita’s Ogachi District beyond Hanayama, referred to as the “Sendai Domain Senboku Border Checkpoint Nuruyu Bansho.” It became a checkpoint station during the Keicho Period after Lord Date Masamune entered Iwadeyama, and for over 200 years served as an inspection station for people and packages passing through.
Presently, various exhibits are on display, from materials passed down from the original bansho, to local folk art and tools which tell the stories and history of the region.
It is one of the rare preserved checkpoint stations remaining in Japan, and was designated a National Historic Site in 1963.

●The thick, sturdy beams of the ceiling
Stepping into the wooden-floored room of the spacious official residence and gazing up at the ceiling, one’s eyes are drawn to the thick, sturdy beams of the second story-high ceiling. Not a single nail is used; they are held in place by wedges, using traditional Japanese joinery techniques.
●Kama Otoko
Upon the pillar sits the large mask of Kama Otoko, the god of the hearth. It seems to narrate the various events of times past.
●The Gate with Visible Hannya Masks
Like the official residence, the main gate is constructed without nails, using wedges instead. The ridge bears the Date family crest, and at both ends are Hannya masks with fearsome expressions.
●Site of the Inspection Office
All travelers of the time had to pass through the main gate blocking the highway. At the inspection office directly ahead, their travel permits and luggage were examined, and those deemed suspicious were detained. Only the base platform remains today, quietly conveying its former presence.
