Day 1: The Samurai Town of Shiroishi

Day 1 Tour Highlights

Take the bullet train to Shiroishi, where your guide and charter vehicle will be waiting for you at the station. Learn about the making of traditional katana from an active swordsmith in Shiroishi and visit the castle during your day trip today. After your tour, enjoy a local specialty Umen lunch in Shiroishi before hopping on the bullet train up to Sendai. Check into your accommodations at a boutique hotel in downtown Sendai, before going out to dine freely in Sendai. We will provide a list of recommended restaurants, or for an additional fee, we can arrange a sake pairing dinner for you!

 

Alternate day plan:

For summer holidayers, this tour has an alternate first day!

First, take a guided tour of Shiroishi in the morning. Learn the deep and storied samurai history of this charming mountain town from a knowledgeable guide.

 

After your tour, enjoy a local specialty Umen lunch in Shiroishi before hopping on the bullet train up to Sendai for the afternoon.

 

In Sendai, you will get to learn learn the Suzume Odori Dance, the quintessential performance of Sendai. which has been passed down from the time of the construction of Sendai Castle when stonemasons performed the dance for Date Masamune. The experience will take place at Ryokusaikan, located in Aobayama which boasts the ruins of Sendai Castle, as well as the Hirose River which flows through the center of Sendai. Experience the nostalgia and glamor of traditions of the samurai and townspeople of Sendai’s castle town days.

 

Check into your accommodations at a Boutique hotel in Downtown Sendai, before going out to dine freely in Sendai.

Day 2: Study Shingan-Ryu Martial Arts in Tome City

Day 2 Tour Highlights

Today, take a day-trip to the charming town of Tome.

Yagyu Shingan-ryu is a comprehensive samurai martial arts system developed in the Sendai Domain during the Edo period (1600–1868). It includes secret techniques which allowed samurai warriors to defeat their enemies in the midst of battle, even when weapons like swords and spears had become exhausted. The martial art became widespread in Tome, with many common folk learning it as a form of self-defense.  Observe a number of these sophisticated techniques in action on the Mori Butai Stage at the of the Tome City Dento Geino Densho-kan, then try out some of the techniques for yourself. 

 

Enjoy lunch in Tome before returning to Sendai in your private charter vehicle. 

 

Dine freely in Sendai this evening before returning to your hotel.

Day 3: Date with the Date Samurai, from Matsushima to Sendai

Day 3 Tour Highlights

 

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel checking out, storing your bags at the hotel, and hopping on a train with your through guide to Matsushima, religious retreat of the Date Samurai. Enjoy a guided tour of the area, including the picturesque Godaido temple, matcha and wagashi sweets at the historic Kanrantei samurai teahouse, and Entsuin temple, home of the mausoleum of a Date clan heir. 

Partake of the delectable Date-samurai version of shojin ryori Buddhist cuisine at Ungai, a restaurant on Entsuin’s grounds. After lunch, return to Sendai for a tour of Zuihoden, the Date family mausoleum, and the Aoba Castle ruins and museum. 

Return to Sendai station, pick up your bags from your previous hotel, and make your way to Akiu onsen to check into your hotel for the evening. Enjoy life like a samurai lord with a multi-course traditional kaiseki ryori meal and incredible natural onsen baths.

Day 4: From Akiu Onward

Enjoy a full traditional Japanese breakfast spread at your onsen ryokan this morning. Wander this picturesque town after breakfast until check-out, and continue on to your next adventure in Japan!
