Cruise Excursion Schedule
Morning
You will start your day in Sakata disembarking from your ship and being guided to your bus in the port. Please reference information for finding your guide and bus in the email we send to confirmed participants on our tour.
Mt. Haguro
Our first stop will be Mt. Haguro, one of the holy Dewa Sanzan mountains of Yamagata. In the company of an interpreter and a Yamabushi mountain monk, a practitioner of shugendo mountain worship, climb the 2,446 steps of Mt. Haguro. Along the way, visit the famous five story pagoda, which has stood for centuries on this spot, and admire the Dewa Sanzan shrine on the summit of the mountain while learning about the history of the religious communities which have revered this special place.
Shojin Ryori Lunch
Once you have made it to the summit, enjoy a traditional shojin ryori vegetarian lunch at a pilgrim’s lodge. The shojin ryori of the Dewa Sanzan makes liberal use of locally foraged vegetables to create delicious meals which cleanse the body and mind. Immerse yourself in the contemplative atmosphere of an authentic Japanese shukobo lodge as you partake of this unique cuisine.
Enjoy a tranquil temple off the beaten path
After lunch, we will make our way back down the mountain to a tranquil Buddhist temple off-the-beaten path. Enjoy matcha and a calmin walk through the beautiful Japanese garden out back, before continuing your journey.
Samurai Silk
For your final stop today, visit Matsugaoka Craft Park. Here you will learn about the history of samurai produced silk in the region, and perhaps pick-up a souvenir of your time in Yamagata.
End of the day: Return to the port in time for the closing ceremony and final send-off of your ship.
