Cruise Schedule:
Note that this will vary slightly as each cruise ship has variations on its arrival and departure.
- Morning: Disembark from cruise ship and board the shuttle bus.
- Morning: Guided hike of Mt. Haguro, one of the holy Dewa Sanzan mountains of Yamagata. In the company of an interpreter and a Yamabushi mountain monk, a pracitioner of shugendo, climb the 2,446 steps of Mt. Haguro while learning about its history.
- Early Afternoon: Enjoy traditional shojin ryori vegetarian lunch at a pilgrim’s lodge on the summit of Mt. Haguro.
- Afternoon: Visit a tranquil Buddhist temple off the beaten path. Enjoy matcha and a calm walk through the beautiful Japanese garden.
- Afternoon: Visit Matsugaoka craft park. Learn about the history of samurai silk in the region, and perhaps pick-up a souvenir of your time in Tohoku.
- End of the day: Return to the port for the closing ceremony and time to show at the port market.
A Special Note For Cruise Passengers
Sakata port is located far away from the city center. Walking is highly discouraged, you should instead take a taxi or look into the cruise shuttle bus to reach the downtown area and its attractions.

As we are a fully licensed travel agency with an office in Sakata City, we are also happy to arrange full day private shore excursions here in Sakata City. Please note that as transportation is in high demand during this time, we only plan trips where we can fully charter a taxi for the day to pick up and drop off at the port. We do not accommodate travelers who seek to use the public bus as this can have wait times of up to one hour. This is not a risk we can take when we need to get guests back to their ship in time for boarding.
